What were they thinking?

I really don't believe in tempting fate. Really.

But how on earth did IVAN, of all names, get on the six-year rotation list of names for Atlantic hurricanes and tropical storms?

Did someone think it would be cute to invite headlines about "Ivan the Terrible" when a storm of that name wrecked havoc on the Caribbean? Or did no one think of that connotation?

Aren't there plenty of perfectly innocuous initial-I male names out there that they could use? Names that are actually of English, French, or Spanish derivation, which is what they're supposed to use for Atlantic storms?
